UH-Hilo fades in the final minutes against Western Oregon

MEDIA RELEASE

The University of Hawaii at Hilo shutdown in the final five minutes as they dropped a West Region match to Western Oregon University at the Western Oregon/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout in Monmouth, Oregon.

The Vulcans are 0-2 while the Wolves are 2-0.

Bryan Ngo and Justin Smith led the way with 16 points each. Lavell Shipman turned in 15 points with nine rebounds while Zachary Wilde added 11 points. Smith also pulled in eight rebounds.

The Vulcans held a 1-point lead on Brandon James lay-up at the 6:41 mark. The Wolves took the lead back with six unanswered points before Smith’s lay-up pulled the Vulcans within three, 71-74.

But things went cold the rest of the way as the Vulcans went 1 for 5 from the field, committed two turnovers and hit just 2 of 4 free throw opportunities down the stretch.

NOTE: Justin Smith was selected to the all-tournament team.
