Steady rains the past few days have saturated the ground in Puna causing flooding in low lying areas Saturday (Nov 14). Renter Rodney Chong found the run-off streaming straight down his driveway, across the garage floor with the water level rising to the threshold of the front door. Chong said the water washed a few feet into the home through the door.
Chong said he called the property manager, who is on the mainland, then called the fire department for help. Firefighters arrived quickly and filled trash bags with water creating a sandbag type barrier protecting the front door from the rising floodwaters. Firefighters and Chong used shovels and a pick to create a trench for the water to flow around the home and built-up two dikes with the debris washed onto the garage floor.
The Ainaloa Community Association brought sandbags and some heavier equipment to deal with the flood threat.
