Middle School students at Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) will present Bugsy Malone at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, October 14 and 15. The hour-long musical performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center on the school’s Upper Campus.

Bugsy Malone, a popular pint-sized, pin-striped movie classic, has been adapted for the stage. Like the film, this wild and wacky musical is a fun romp set in the 1920s. There are “splurge blasters” that spew forth “silly string” as Dandy Dan’s gang tries to take over Fat Sam’s territory. In between splurgings, which keep the splurge attendants in business, the chorus girls sing of Bugsy, Tallulah and girls keep the Grand Slam buzzing, and Lena walks in and out of the Bijoux Theatre, while the newly-arrived Blousey looks for a job!

The show is directed by Middle School teachers Barbara Kopra and Kelly Buscher.
