Mayor Billy Kenoi today vetoed Bill 103, which would allow Puna residents to live in tents on their property while building a home.

In a veto message to the Hawai‘i County Council delivered to the County Clerk today, Mayor Kenoi said the main reason for the veto is that the bill applies only to the District of Puna.

Thanks to the rapid response and generous support of library users across the state, a portion of the monetary donations raised through the "Keep Your Library Open!" fund-raising campaign will be used to keep Mountain View Public and School Library open during the month of October.  This Big Island Library was previously scheduled to be temporarily closed from October 2-22, 2009 because of funding and staffing shortages, but library staffs at Mountain View and in HSPLS support offices have been able to reverse closure plans and schedules.

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE (9/27/09) Hawaii County Civil Defense reported that Highway 19 was reopened as of 5:30 p.m. MEDIA RELEASE Hawaii County Civil Defense reports Highway 19 being closed at the 44-45 mile marker as of 4:15 p.m. due to a traffic crash. The University of Hawaii at Hilo finished in a tie for 13th place at the St. Martin’s University Invitational with a two-round score of 621.
 
Neil Cabico led the Vulcans with a 150 (74-76) and was tied for 29th place. Logan Goulding was tied for 53rd place with a 155 (80-75). Rounding out the Vulcan squad are Ryan Felix (T64, 79-79=158), Isaac Jaffurs (T64, 80-78=158) and Christopher Armanini (T75, 81-79=160).
