Kona’s 4th of July parade featured on Channel 54

Nearly 50 floats and marching units joined the festivities as Kona marked Independence Day with a parade along Alii Drive and fireworks show from a barge in Kailua Bay. 

UPDATE, 10:55 p.m. Monday, July 6: The Kona parade will be featured on public access TV Channel 54

The following is a list of broadcast dates and times:

4 p.m. Saturday, July 11

2 p.m. Sunday, July 12

6 p.m. Tuesday, July 14

6 p.m. Thursday, July 16

4 p.m. Saturday, July 25

8 p.m. Monday, July 27

Also, this program may air as a filler on Channel 53 with no schedule.

A large and joyful crowd of spectators welcomed 46 colorful entries at the 14th annual Kailua-Kona Independence Day parade last Saturday evening.  The theme was “Celebrate Freedom!” 

Third Circuit Judge Ronald Ibarra served as Grand Marshal.  

The Independence Day parade committee announced that thanks to the generosity of 22 local businesses and organizations, the following entries have been awarded certificates, plaques, or small cash prizes:

Non-profit Entries

Floats: 

First:  Pohakuloa Training Area

Second: Hospice of Kona

Third:   County of Hawaii

Marching:

First:   Camp Tawara Detachment #1255

Second:  Life Care Center of Kona

Third: U.S. Marine Corps

Patriotic: 

First:  Kona Vet Center – Kona VA Clinic

Second:  Disabled American Veterans

Third: Hawaii Army National Guard 

Commercial & Political Entries

Patriotic: 

First: Dolphin Journeys

Second:  K-mart

Third: Target

All Entries:

Best Use of Theme:  Big Island Tea Party

Best Crowd Pleaser:  United States Marine Corps

Judges’ Special Award:  Red Light Taxi

Winners may pick up their awards at the mayor’s new Kona side office in the Kona Center, 75-5722 Hanama Place, Suite 102, across Hanama Place from Big Island Grill, beginning Thursday, July 9.
