Fire/Rescue crews responded to a 4:33 a.m. alarm Friday (May 29) to Kapapala Forest Reserve for overdue Maile pickers Miles Enos, 24 years-old, and Justin Hanohano, 22 years-old, who entered the forest on Thursday. The area is at the 3,800 foot elevation level in old-growth, heavily forested and mountainous terrain on the eastern slope of Mauna Loa.

The missing pickers experienced poor visibility while hiking due to disorienting, heavy vog on a poorly marked zig-zag trail. The pickers spent Thursday night in the forest.

At daybreak Friday (May 29) fire/rescue ground units began a search on the steep trail and Chopper One was dispatched for an air search. At 10:10 a.m. Enos and Hanohano were spotted by Chopper One walking on a jeep trail. The missing pickers were extracted via Billy Pugh net and brought out. Both men were in good health and needed no medical attention.
