Konawaena eighth-grader Talmage Nakamoto advanced through round four of the Scripps National Spelling Bee by spelling strontium correctly Thursday (May 28) the final day of the competition.
In round five Nakamoto spelled passerelle correctly and advanced to round six with 15 other spellers in the semifinals.
Nakamoto entered the sixth round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and was given the word caliche which he incorrectly spelled as calicchi. Caliche is a mineral deposit of gravel, sand and nitrates, found especially in dry areas of South America.
Eleven spellers are going into the finals tonight.
