Class of 2009 graduates from Hawaii Prep

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy awarded diplomas to 85 members of the Class of 2009 at commencement exercises May 22 at Castle Gymnasium.

Patrick O’Leary, Upper School social studies and fine arts teacher, gave the commencement address.  Prizes and awards went to the following seniors: Headmaster’s Award, Elliot Kastner; Founder’s Award, Amelia Evans and Keneiloe Shuping; Senior Scholar, Eli Hart; Walter Liu Memorial Leadership Award, Ken Mamizuka and Breeani Kobayashi; Kevin Kitagawa Memorial Bootstrap Award, Korey Tsubota; Athletes of the Year, Elliot Kastner and Noe Vargas; Roy Fujimoto Senior Scholar, Noe Vargas; Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) Champion Awards, Mindy Campbell (High Jump) and Ku’uipo Nakoa (Long Jump); Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union Albert Akana College Scholarship, Summer Borowski; Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship, Amelia Evans; and North Hawaii Rotary Club Scholarship, Devin Fujioka.

Harold C. Hughes ‘68, of the HPA Alumni Association, presented Headmaster Lindsay Barnes with a pledge for $6,000 from the HPA Alumni Association, to be used for financial aid for future generations of students.  Hughes also presented the faculty “At-A-Way” award to Patrick O’Leary and the Alumni Association Award, the association’s highest award, to Michael and Jeannette Saalfeld in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the school.

The Ellbogen Meritorious Teaching Award was given to math teacher Lupe Diaz. The HPA Boosters Club presented Jon-Paul Mangarin with the Coaching Excellence Award for 2008-2009.

    I visited the Robert Kaimanu Warren Wildlife Preserve in Eugene, Oregon. Very lovely place.
