8th Annual Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Clinic July 17-19

Applications are now available for the 8th Annual Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Clinic scheduled for July 17-19 at the Kailua-Kona Regulation Baseball Diamond (Simmons’ Field).

After a tremendous response from the participants and coaches the past seven years, the Foundations of Jack Gifford and Betty Kanuha, in cooperation with the County of Hawai‘i Parks & Recreation Department, will again sponsor the clinic open to boys & girls ages 7-17.

Several outstanding collegiate coaches have been assembled for this camp. Participating are NCAA Division I head coaches are Mark Marques (Stanford), Sam Piraro (San Jose St.), David Esquer (California), Ritchie Price (Kansas), Lindsey Meggs (Indiana St.), Mike Gillespie (UC-Irvine), and David Eldredge (Southern Utah). Also on the camp staff are coaches Chad Konishi (UH-Manoa), Joey Estrella (UH-Hilo), Tom Kunis (San Jose St.), Chris Bradford (St. Francis High School, Calif.) and former UCLA head coach Gary Adams and assistants Glenn Mickins and Jason Green. Former Major League Baseball players Tim Leary, Billy Haselman and Doug DeCinces are also on staff.

On Friday and Saturday, the schedule will be 8:30 a.m. – 11: 30 a.m. for the 7-11-year-olds and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. for the 12-17-year-olds at the regulation baseball field and adjacent youth baseball fields.

Sunday’s clinic schedule calls for the 7-11 age groups to report from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the regulation baseball field while ages 12-17 report from 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
From 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Kekua‘okalani Gym, the coaches and staff will present a seminar on “Preparing Your Child for College”. Parents are asked to attend this important session with their children. Refreshments will be served.
Each participant must bring their own glove, batting helmet, bat, shoes, baseball protective supports (as required by all youth leagues for participation) and water bottles.

The clinic staff welcomes volunteer help for all drill stations. Contact Joey Estrella at 974-7700, if you are interested.

Registration will be handled at the Parks & Recreation offices at the following locations: Kekua‘okalani Gym, Waimea Community Center, Waikoloa Park, and the Parks & Recreation Division Office located at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale in Hilo.

Applications are available in Kailua-Kona at SWING ZONE, Wally’s Watch Service and Standard Bakery and in Hilo at SPORTSLINE.

Completed applications should be dropped off at the Park’s & Recreation Centers only.

Each session will be limited to the first 200 participants in the specific age group.
