Both teams are guaranteed a spot in the State softball tournament, but bragging rights and the top seed for the BIIF Division-I championship was on the line when Hilo and Waiakea played today. The Warriors were hot right out of the gates, scoring eight runs in the first inning before Vikings pitcher Kadi Pulgados had settled down. Waiakea’s starter Alana Tsue ran through the order quickly, allowing only one hit and one walk with eight strikeouts before being replaced in the top of the fifth inning by Tiffany Anzai. Hilo’s starter Kadi Pulgados took the loss on three innings of work with Tiffany Hoota coming into the game midway through the third inning to get three outs and retire the side. Waiakea regained their hot bats in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring an additional seven runs. Hilo was unable to make anything happen in the top of the fifth inning and the game was called after three Viking plate appearances.

For Waiakea, Katelyn Adviento, Chanel Fontes, and Erin Oshiro went 2-for-2, while Kiah Taroma and Kami Imai went 2-for-4. Skylar Agrigado came off the bench for Waiakea and got the only homerun in the game. Chelsea Hirai had the lone hit for Hilo. Waiakea and Hilo will be playing in the upcoming State HHSAA Division-I softball tournamet that will be held on May 12-15, 2009.
