Teen dating abuse expert to provide local workshops

Dr. Jill Murray, a renowned expert on teen dating and relationships abuse will be conducting several workshops April 27-30 in Hilo and Kona.

Murray will present, “Love Shouldn’t Hurt: What You Can Do About Relationship and Dating Abuse,” for healthcare providers, therapists, counselors, social workers, school personnel, police and anyone dealing with relationship/dating abuse 1-3:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Aupuni Center Conference Room in Hilo; and 2-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the UH West Hawaii Center in Kona.

A “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” workshop for parents, teens, teachers, family, friends and co-workers of people affected by relationship/dating abuse is 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Hilo High School cafeteria; and 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at King Kamehameha Beach Hotel in Kona.

All workshops are free. Those wishing to attend are asked to call Lisa Inouye at 934-3310 or Nancy Kelly at 934-3315.

Murray has spoken before Congress as a guest expert on behalf of a teen dating violence bill and recently gave a press conference on the subject at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. 

She is a highly sought-after guest lecturer at international conferences on domestic violence, personal empowerment and motivation, and speaks to more than 100,000 middle and high school students each year.

Murray has appeared on more than 350 television shows, more than 300 radio talk shows, and has been interviewed by more than 250 newspapers and national magazines on the subject.

She is the author of several best-selling books, including “But He Never Hit Me – The Devastating Cost of Non-Physical Abuse to Girls and Women,” which won a prestigious Publisher’s Choice award. 

Murray maintains a private practice in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Workshop sponsors include the county Committee on the Status of Women, Councilmembers Emily Naeole (5th District) and Brenda Ford (7th District), county Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Hawaii Community College Sexual Violence Prevention Project, and Soroptimist International of Kona.
