HI-PAL 3-on-3 basketball tournaments

The Hawai’i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section and the Hawai’i Isle Police Activities League (HI-PAL) are sponsoring “Click It or Ticket” 3-on-3 basketball tournaments at four locations.

The tournaments will be held on the following dates at the following locations:

  • May 9-10 Pahala Gymnasium in Ka‘u
  • June 6-7 Kea‘au High School Gymnasium in Kea‘au
  • June 11-12 Honoka’a Sports Complex in Honoka‘a
  • August 8-9 or August 15-16 (Dates TBA) Kawananakoa Sports Complex in Keaukaha

“I’m excited about this year’s opportunity to bring the ‘Click It or Ticket’ message to four different district communities on the island,” said HI-PAL’s East Hawaii Coordinator, Officer Joseph Botelho Jr. “This is the first time we’re trying to do this and we’re hoping the success will allow us to continue this type of venture island wide.”

Team entries are being accepted in the following age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 for boys; girls 10 and under, girls 12 and under, girls 14 and under and girls 15-17. A player may participate in only one division. The age cutoff date is December 31, 2009. Each division will be limited.

Each team must complete a registration packet. Completed packets must be turned in by Friday, May 1, for the Ka‘u event; Friday, May 22, for the Kea’au event; Friday, July 3, for the Honoka’a event; and Friday, July 31, for the Keaukaha event. The completed packets may be dropped off at the Community Policing Office, which is located on the first floor of Building A at the South Hilo police station.

Teams interested in participating in the Ka’u event may call Officer Randy Morris at 326-4646, extension 258. Teams interested in participating in the other three events may call Officer Botelho at 961-2220 or 896-9710. The FAX number is 961-2209.

“Click It or Ticket” is a national educational and enforcement campaign to increase seat belt use and to decrease traffic fatalities and injuries.
