Charter Commission set to begin its review

MEDIA RELEASE

The 11-member Charter Commission appointed by the Mayor was convened this year by law – once every 10 years — to review the County Charter and propose changes. The Commission met for the first time this year on March 13 for an organizational meeting.

Chairman of the Commission is Ed Haitsuka; vice chairman is David Fuertes. Other members include Daphne Honma, Todd Shumway, Seth Murashige, Jamae Kawauchi, Alapaki Nahale-a, Susan Osborne, Casey M. Jarman, Scott Unger, and Joseph Kealoha.

Thursday’s meeting will be held in the Hawai‘i County Council chambers in the Ben Franklin building, 2nd floor, at 333 Kīlauea Ave., Hilo. Videoconferencing will be available at the Kona Council office, Kailua Trade Center, 75-5706 Hanama Polace, Suite 109, Kailua.

The Commission will conduct regular monthly meetings and will schedule at least 6 public hearings at times and dates to be determined. Normally, regular meetings are on the 2nd Friday of each month, but this month’s meeting is on Thursday, April 9th, because Friday is a holiday.

The Commission on Thursday is expected to discuss Articles I to IV of the Charter, as well as goals, objectives, and proposed schedule for discussing the Charter’s articles. The agenda for Thursday’s meeting is available online here.

Public Testimony is accepted in writing or in person on items on the agenda. You may also contact Commission Secretary Karen Eoff, 327-0099 (keoff@co.hawaii.hi.us), to be placed on agenda notification list.
