UH-Hilo coach Honma among 90 recognized by YWCA at Gala Celebration

University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s basketball coach Daphne Honma is among 90 being recognized at the YWCA’s 90th Gala Celebration on Saturday, April 4 at the Executive Center.

The YWCA Board of Directors is recognizing the third-year Vulcan coach for her contributions as an educator and coach during her outstanding career on the Big Island.

According to a YWCA release, “As a women’s membership movement, we believe that strong leadership is needed at all levels. We celebrate the leadership and extraordinary efforts of these women and men who demonstrate outstanding impact and innovation in responding to the challenges facing our world through their accomplishments in business, culture, the arts, education, government, health and wellness, law, media, safety, science, and overall community involvement.

“Through their professional and volunteer work, these individuals have helped to advance the goals of the YWCA — the empowerment of women and girls and the elimination of racism. We are honored to celebrate these remarkable people who have shaped our history and are leading change that is shaping our future.”

Hosted by Skylark, the evening will celebrate YWCA’s history on Hawai’i through art and music. Following a welcoming pule by Sandra Claveria and hula performance by Aloha Bezilla, guests will be invited to enjoy an island inspired dinner prepared by world renowned Chef Daniel Thiebaut and live music by Keahi Conjugacion and Russell Mauga. Guests will also be treated to the Hilo debut of Iris Gil, Hawaii Island’s Paris trained designer. Gil will take guests take a world tour as the costumes of our island heritage are blended with contemporary style in a garden style fashion show.

Tickets for the Gala Celebration are available by calling the YWCA at 935-7141. Due to limited parking at the Executive Center, transportation will be provided from the YWCA campus at 145 Ululani Street to the Celebration beginning at 5:15 p.m. with return shuttles beginning at 9 p.m.

The $90 ticket includes a $50 tax deductible donation to the YWCA. All proceeds raised from the event directly benefit the work of the YWCA Hawai’i Island through its community based programs; YWCA Enhanced Healthy Start, YWCA Healthy Start, YWCA Development Preschool and school age programs, YWCA Hamakua Youth Center, YWCA Teen Court, YWCA Empowering Alternatives Program (24 hour Sexual Assault Crisis Hotline) and YWCA Aquatics.
