Kayakers rescued off Lapakahi State Historical Park

Fire/Rescue crews responded to a 2:06 p.m. alarm for kayakers in distress off Lapakahi State Historical Park along the Kohala Coast.

Fire department crews on shore spotted the the kayak with two occupants on board approximately one mile in open ocean off Lapakahi Park. Fire department Choppers 1 and 2 were dispatched to the scene to aid in the rescue. Seas were rough with wind blowing at approximately 40 mph and the kayakers were exhausted according to fire dispatch.

Upon arrival Chopper 2 watched over the kayakers and awaited for the arrival of Chopper 1 with rescue personnel who airlifted the two kayakers via billy pugh net to shore. No injuries were reported and rescue crews were back in quarters by 3:36 p.m.
