Civil Defense reports that Akoni Pule Highway is now open but urges the public to be alert for emergency vehicles still on the scene.

Witnesses reported a brushfire along the Kohala coast a couple of miles north of Kawaihae Harbor. Gusty winds caused the fire to spread across about 30 acres in a makai direction. The fire was reported to be partially contained by early evening.

Hawaii County Civil Defense has closed Akoni Pule Hwy between the 7 and 22 mile markers as of 4:30 p.m. Motorists were advised to detour and use Kohala Mountain Road. 

No updated information was available from police, fire or Civil Defense personnel through Tuesday evening and into the early hours of Wednesday.
