At about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, a dust devil ripped the roof off Ka‘u High School & Pahala Elementary Saturday. No injuries were reported, but the roof was damaged and debris were sent flying over 100 yards away. The cost of the damage remained unknown Monday, March 2.
Debris on the front side of the administration building and classrooms where a twister pulled off about 100 feet of roofing. Police confirmed reports that a tornado did touch down in the area.
A large piece of roofing is lodged in a tree after a tornado ripped open the roof of Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary. Debris were reported to have been scattered over 100 yards away.
The crown of the roof is peeled back and wood framing has stabbed its way through the metal roof.
Utility lines were pulled down by the late morning dust devil.
