Wildcats state champions in 2OT

A scrappy Konawaena team snatched the title away from Punahou at the HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships Friday, Feb. 27 at Blaisdell Arena.

Final score: Konawaena 54 , Punahou 50 – 2 OT

The two teams had battled each other in the championship game in 2005 and in 2007 – with each taking one title.

Konawaena girls took a 21-18 lead into the break after a rough-and-tumble first half that saw the lead change several times.

The Wildcats built steadily on their lead in the second half, up 11 points after three quarters, and hung tough as Punahou surged back.

With Konawaena hanging on to a 2 point lead with just 1:30 left, Punahou got a couple of favorable calls and tied it up at 44 with 33 seconds left.

As the clock ran out, Konawaena missed two shots, sending the game into overtime.

A slightly slowed down overtime results in only one point for each team, and it’s into a second overtime period.

Freshman sensation Emalia Galdeira eased in a lay-up to put the WIldcats up 47-45 and worked herself loose to stick in another two points with less than a minute left.

An accidental poke in the eye shook Galdeira enough to miss two foul shots and Punahou clawed back to 49-47.

A pass into Galdeira under the basket was good enough for another bucket and then a couple of foul shots sealed it.

Galdeira, who racked up 23 points in the championship game, was voted the outstanding player of the Division I tournament.

No. 2 seed Konawaena was making its ninth appearance at the state tournament, having won the title in 2004 and squaring off against Punahou to take the 2007 title.

No. 1 seed Punahou has earned a state berth 21 times, the most of any school, and this year marked its record 14th consecutive appearance. Punahou has won the state championship nine times, the most of any school, the last title coming in 2008.

Between Punahou coach Mike Taylor and Konawaena coach Bobby Awa, the pair have led the last seven state champions.

Third place – Lahainaluna 56, Farrington 52

Fifth place – Roosevelt 51, Iolani 48

Championship – Konawaena 54, Punahou 50
