UH-Hilo Vulcan men beat Notre Dame de Namur in quadruple overtime

MEDIA RELEASE

January 23 – The Argos and Vulcans needed 20 extra minutes to decide a winner as the two teams battled through four overtimes before Hawaii Hilo prevailed 103-92. The back and forth game featured eleven lead changes and nine ties before the Vulcans broke out in the fourth overtime.

NDNU came out gunning, taking an early 12-6 defense thanks to outstanding perimeter defense. The Vulcans failed to connect on their first six 3-point attempts before hitting two in a row to tie the game at 12-12. After UHH briefly took the lead, the Argos responded with a 12-2 run to take a six point advantage with just over five minutes remaining. The margin grew to nine as Bennie Murray knocked down a pair of triples before Josh Malloy added one of his own.

The Argos shot 52% in the half and held to Vulcans to just 32% shooting to take a 33-26 lead into the break. UHH also connected on just 2-14 threes while NDNU went 4-10 from beyond the arc.

The second half was a different story as the Vulcans fought their way back into the game. With 9:16 left, the Argos led 46-39 but that lead would quickly evaporate as UHH rattled off ten straight points to take a three point advantage. After NDNU fell behind by three points in the final two minutes, senior Dan Bergeron came up big with a game tying 3-pointer.

Jay DeMaestri then put the Vulcans up by two with layup with just eleven seconds remaining. However, Bergeron once again came up big with a layup with 3.5 second left to tie the score. Bergeron was also fouled but could not connect on his free throw, thus sending the game into overtime.

Murray drained a three to open up the first overtime, but the lead would not last long as Jacob Briggs responded with a triple of his own. Andre Hayes’s two free throws and Bergeron’s jumper gave NDNU a four point lead with 18 seconds left but the Vulcans once again countered. Charlando Brown hit a runner and Briggs connected on layup in the final seconds to send the game into a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the Argos once again took a lead into the final minute before Hawaii Hilo fought back. With NDNU leading by two with 29 seconds left, Hayes turned the ball over and DeMaestri hit a lay-up to once again knot the score.

With the game tied 69-69 heading into the third overtime, the Vulcans came out strong with a pair of buckets to take a four point advantage. However, Murray responded with a three to cut the deficit to one. The Vulcans took that one point lead into the final minute before stretching it to five with 17 seconds left after sinking four straight free throws.

The Argos refused to give up as they cut the lead to two with an off balance 3-pointer by Jeff Berridge with just eight second left. After John Smith hit 1-2 from the line, the Vulcans fouled Bergeron with three seconds left so he could not get off a game tying three. At the line, Bergeron sunk the first before missing the second one of purpose. Hayes came up huge, grabbing the miss and getting fouled on his put back attempt with 1.5 seconds left. Hayes calmly sunk both free throws to send the game to a fourth extra period.

In the fourth overtime, Smith took the game over as he scored nine of the Vulcans 20 points to earn UHH the victory.

Bennie Murray led all scores with a career high 25 points and knocked down six 3-pointers. Dan Bergeron added 21 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists while Andre Hayes also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Malloy was the fourth Argonaut in double figures with 13 points.

The Vulcans had six players in double figures, including all five starters. John Smith led the way with 21 points and seven assists while Jay DaMeastri added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Perry Baggett recorded 19 points and Charlando Brown tacked on 18 of his own.

The Argos are back in action Monday evening when the travel to take on Dixie State for a Pacific West Conference showdown.
