Chamber conference: Summit to the Sea

MEDIA RELEASE

Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce presents the fifth annual Environment & Natural Resources Conference: Summit to the Sea, focusing on the mauka watershed and coastal marine environment of West Hawaii.

The conference is slated for 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16 at King Kamehemeha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The cost is $45 for chamber members and $55 for non-members.

The ahupuaa system of land division and management recognized that natural resources varied with elevation, yet were linked by water that flowed from the wao akua, the realm of the gods, to the wao kanaka, the realm of man. Then, as now, the people of the land were sustained by the diversity of resources from summit to sea.

The intent of this conference is to promote awareness and collaboration between the people who care about, and have responsibility for, effective stewardship of West Hawaii’s natural resources.

Speakers will focus on links between watershed and coastal systems and emphasize solutions to overcoming management challenges.
