New Year’s Day fire loss estimated at $1M

On Thursday, Jan. 1 at approximately 2 a.m., South Hilo emergency responders were called to a house fire at 65 Halaulani Place.

Upon arrival, fire and police personnel found the home engulfed in flames. It was reported to be a five-story structure and its estimated value was $1 million dollars. 

Four engine units battled the blaze with two medic units also responding to the scene. All tenants were accounted for and no injuries were reported.

The fire destroyed the entire home and also burned two vehicles parked in the carport. No damages were reported to surrounding homes.

Nine college students lived in the structure; a Red Cross representative was at the scene to meet with the students.

Fire crews stayed at the scene overnight, monitoring the structure and investigating the fire. 

Fire investigators were unable to immediately determine the cause of the blaze.

Police ask anyone with information about the fire to call Officer Victor McLellan at 961-2213. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 or 329-8181.
