Flood advisory update

This is a Civil Defense message.

This is a flood advisory update for 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26.

Hawaii County remains under a flash flood warning. A flash flood warning means that flash flooding is imminent or already occurring. Currently, heavy rains are still being reported in the districts of Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and Ka’u. The National Weather Service forecasts rains to continue through this evening.

Due to the flash flood warning, the following are issued:

  • All motorists are advised to drive with caution and be on the alert for debris, run-off, and ponding of water. The Police Department reports the closure of Mauna Kea Access Road. All other highways are open at this time, but be aware that closures and slowdowns can occur without warning.
  • All residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain on the alert for possible flooding conditions.

Again the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Hawaii Island. The National Weather Service forecasts rains to continue through this evening. All major highways remain open.
