Pahoa man dies in motorcycle crash

A 52-year-old Pahoa man died Saturday, Dec. 6 from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on Leilani Avenue, west of Pohoiki Road in the Leilani Estates Subdivision in the Puna District, police reported.

Responding to a 4:08 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined the man was operating a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling west on Leilani Avenue when he lost control, crossed the centerline and collided with a utility pole.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Hilo Medical Center, where he later died at 7:15 p.m.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were involved.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 26th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 35 at the same time last year.
