North Kohala woman struck by car, dies

A 33-year-old North Kohala woman died Saturday, Nov. 29 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision on Akoni Pule Highway, west of Kohala Intermediate and High School.

She was identified as Stanette Medeiros of a Kapaau address.

Responding to a 9:36 p.m. Friday call, North Kohala patrol officers determined a 20-year-old man was driving a 2008 Honda four-door sedan east on Akoni Pule Highway when he struck the victim in the middle of the highway.

Medeiros was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:09 a.m. Saturday. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

After the collision, the driver fled the scene and later returned. He was arrested for suspicion of negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, accident involving injury or death and prohibitions involving minors. The driver was not injured in the crash.

After conferring with the county Prosecutor’s Office, the driver was released pending further investigation.

This is the 25th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 35 at this time last year.
