Hoku concert aimed at isle keiki

MEDIA RELEASE

For the first time on the Big Island, Broadway singers will perform in a concert just for kids. West Hawaii families who enjoy music and culture have an entertainment treat in store Sunday, Nov. 29 to kick off the holiday season. At an estate overlooking the Kona Coast, world-class singers will belt out tunes from musical theater, exclusively for children accompanied by their parents.

“Adults have been enjoying eight years of excellence of renowned ‘crossover’ (pop/opera) singers flying to our island for the Hoku Concert Series,” said Kristi Van Pernis, chairwoman of the first Hoku Kids Concert. “Now we can share this high caliber cultural opportunity with our children.”

The program will include favorites from such shows as “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera.” Following the show, the artists will answer questions from the children about the life of a stage performer.

On Nov. 30 at the 8th Annual Hoku Concert Series, the headliners soprano Anya Matanovic, from New York, and tenor Wesley Rogers, from Seattle, will entertain with hits from both the opera and Broadway stages.

Tickets for the Nov. 29 “Hoku Kids Go Broadway” are $40 for adults, $25 for children and $125 for reserved seating. Tickets for the Nov. 30 “Ke Kai Manlino – Beyond the Seat” are $125 or Alii patrons for $250.

Proceeds benefit the Aloha Performing Arts Company. Reservations are limited and may be made at www.apachawaii.org or 322-1648.
