Shark attack near Anaehoomalu Bay, area beaches are closed Tuesday (April 23)

At 9:15 a.m., Tuesday (April 23) Hawaii County Civil Defense announced a beach closure due to a shark attack in West Hawaii. The Fire Department reported a shark attack occurred off the coast near Anaehoomalu Bay (A Bay) around 8:30 a.m. this morning. The beaches in the vicinity are closed until further notice.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory records 5.3M quake and aftershocks in Kona Saturday (April 13)

Three aftershocks were recorded within an hour of the earthquake, including a magnitude-3.0 event approximately 11 minutes following the mainshock. Additional aftershocks are expected.

Man reports shark attack after being knocked off canoe in Waikoloa

A 75-year-old man received wounds to his leg after 10:00 a.m. in an apparent shark encounter. The Hawai‘i County Fire Dept. received the report from an isolated area between ‘Anaeho‘omalu Bay and Keawaiki in the Waikoloa area of North Hawai‘i.

Results of the HIPA Kuuipo Canoe Races in Kona Saturday (March 16)

Results of the Hawaii Island Paddlesports Association (HIPA) canoe races for OC-1, OC-2, V-1 Rudderless canoes. The 10-mile long course started outside Honokohau Harbor and finished inside Keauhou Bay, while the 6-mile short course ran from outside Keauhou to turn at Lyman’s Bay and returned to the finish line inside Keauhou Bay.

The Finance Department reports that Vehicle Registration and Driver’s License Services are not available in Waimea and at the West Hawaii Civic Center until further notice due to severed cables by falling trees.
