Troy Barboza Torch Run this weekend in Keaau and Kona

On Saturday (April 9), runners and walkers will be on the road in Keaau approximately 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. On Sunday (April 10), participants will be on the road between approximately 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Kona for the 2011 Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run/Walk for Special Olympics.

Officers partner with Special Olympics for torch run

On Saturday, April 10, the “Guardians of the Flame” carried the “Flame of Hope” from the Kea’au Police Station to the Kea’au High School sports complex, where they were greeted by athletes representing various Big Island schools as part of the opening ceremonies for the annual games sponsored by the East and West Hawai’i Special Olympics. Roughly 35 people walked or ran in East Hawai’i.

Barboza Torch Run preceeds Special Olympics powerlifting competition

The Hawaii Police Department and volunteers will carry the “Flame of Hope” through the streets of Kailua-Kona Sunday, April 11, in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes.

This event, known as the Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, is a tradition in the law enforcement community around the world. It begins at 9 a.m. at First Hawaiian Bank in the Lanihau Shopping Center.
