Fire/rescue responded to a 5:35 p.m. alarm Sunday (Oct 15) to the Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Route 19) near the 69 mile marker for a brush fire in South Kohala.

Crews arrived to find a 200-foot by 30-foot brush fire on the makai sie of the highway burning in strong trade winds at 25-40 mph. About 25 good samaritans had contained the fire using water bottles, soda, beer and fire extinguishers.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a possible drowning in South Kohala.

On Monday (August 29) officers responded to a 3:40 p.m. report of an unresponsive woman in a pool at a resort on Mauna Kea Beach Drive. When police and Fire Department personnel arrived, resort staff members were attempting cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Fire Department personnel took over attempts to revive the victim but were unsuccessful.

Mamalahoa and Daniel K. Inouye Highways open to traffic

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that Route 190 and the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (New Saddle Road) is now fully open. The highways were previously closed due to several brush fires being actively fought by the Hawai’i Fire Department and military personnel.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a possible drowning over the weekend in the South Kohala District. At 9:35 a.m. Sunday (December 28), South Kohala officers responded to report of a male swimmer in distress at Wailea Beach in Puakō. A kayaker had found the swimmer motionless in the water and had taken him to shore.
