A sewage spill has forced the closure of recreational activity in Hilo Bay at the shoreline near the Wailuku River and Kaipalaoa Landing Monday (July 10). A broken sewer line leaked wastewater into a storm drain at the corner of Waianuenue Avenue and Kinoole Street.

The Department of Environmental Management reports a sewage spill occurred earlier today at Ali’I Drive and Palani Road due to a ruptured main and has entered the ocean at Kailua Bay. The Department of Environmental Management reports that water quality levels in the spill area have returned to normal. The Department of Health confirmed that all Hilo Bayfront area beach parks can now be opened. The County is mobilizing to open up the area at this time.
