Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a telephone scam from persons claiming to be from the Department of Water Supply.

The individuals call Water Supply customers and threaten to shut off their water service because of what they claim is a past due water bill.

According to the Department of Water Supply, the calls are fraudulent and an attempt to gain access to credit card or other financial information.

The Hawaii County Fire Department has received numerous complaints from the public regarding solicitations for inspection and/or installation of smoke detectors. The Hawaii County Fire Department would like to stress that the Department has NOT provided any individual or company with any support or approval for smoke detector inspections on behalf of the Fire Department.

The callers claim to be calling from “Publishers Clearing House” or another company and then give instructions to send a money order or other form of payment to pay for award processing fees.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a telephone utility scam.  A Naʻalehu business reported Tuesday (March 14) that it received a phone call from someone posing as a representative of Hawaiʻi Electric Light Company.  The caller claimed the business’ electric bill was overdue and said that the electricity would be turned off unless the bill was paid immediately.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning businesses and the public about individuals using forged or worthless checks to purchase items or services.

Police advise anyone receiving a check as payment to be cautious, to confirm identification and to take note of any suspicious activity.​

Anyone with information about any bogus checks is asked to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a new twist on a sweepstakes scam.

A 70-year-old Keaʻau woman received a phone call from someone at an 876 area code. The caller claimed the recipient had won a sweepstakes prize.

The woman was suspicious that it was a scam, so the caller asked for her credit card number and said he would pay off her credit card in an act of good faith. He told her to check with her bank for confirmation. The bank confirmed that a deposit to her account was pending, which alleviated the victim’s suspicions. It was later determined that the deposit was never completed.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a series of telephone scams by callers claiming to represent resort hotels.

A recorded messages claims that the recipient is an awards member of the resort and has earned either free accommodations or a discounted vacation package. The recipient is then asked to press “1” after which a live person makes a presentation that ultimately ends with a request for the recipient’s credit card number.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a new twist on existing scams.

In the past few days, police in Kona have received five reports of telephone scams in which the recipient is asked to purchase iTunes gift cards in specific dollar amounts and then to await further instructions. In various calls, the funds were being sought for claims of delinquent energy bills, back taxes owed to the IRS, or bail money to keep a member of the recipient’s family out of jail.

A Kailua-Kona resident received a call from someone claiming to be a tax office employee providing the recipient with a new tax identification number. The caller also requested personal information. The recipient did not provide any information and hung up the phone.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a telephone scam claiming the recipient has won a large monetary prize.

The caller claims to be a representative from a well-known publishing company and congratulates the recipient for supposedly winning its sweepstakes. One such caller claimed a Kaʻū resident’s phone number had been selected in a drawing. The caller then attempts to obtain the recipient’s name, and he or she asks for a “processing fee” to be sent through a money transfer service to an individual in Jamaica.
