A light 4.4 magnitude temblor rocked the Big Island Saturday morning (Jan 5) at 4:37 a.m. The quake was centered in the old Royal Gardens subdivision area where the current lava flows off Pu‘u ‘O‘o crater have been flowing. Reports came in island-wide from residents having felt the quake.

(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.) On Kilauea’s east rift zone, small breakouts were active well above the pali, about 1 km (0.6 mile) above Royal Gardens subdivision, through the week. There are no active flows on the face of the pali, on the coastal plain, or […]

(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.) Lava continues to erupt from the TEB vent, on Kilauea’s east rift zone, and flows through tubes to the ocean at Waikupanaha. Breakouts from the tube on the pali have been supplying surface flows in the Royal Gardens area. A DI […]

(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.) Surface flows have been active on the pali within Royal Gardens subdivision throughout the past week, burning forest and one unoccupied structure. At the coast, the Waikupanaha and Kupapau ocean entries remain active and continue to produce steam plumes and small […]

(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.) Surface flows in the Royal Gardens subdivision slowed early this past week in response to a deflation-inflation (DI) event at Kilauea’s summit, but had picked up again by Wednesday evening, July 1. At the coast, the Waikupanaha and Kupapau ocean entries […]

(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.) Surface flows in the Royal Gardens subdivision may have stagnated early this past week in response to a deflation-inflation (DI) event at Kilauea’s summit. Smoke continues to rise, however, from forested kipuka in the subdivision, indicating that at least some burning […]

(Activity updates are written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.) The breakout within the Royal Gardens subdivision remained active as of Thursday, June 11, but had diminished greatly compared to the previous week. A small breakout on the coastal plain active late last week was stagnant by early this week. No […]
