Autopsy to be conducted on body recovered from Rainbow Falls Saturday (March 31)

Big Island police are investigating the discovery of a body found floating in the area of Rainbow Falls in Hilo on Saturday, (March 31). The Hawaiʻi Fire Department helicopter and rescue personnel located and recovered the body, which was turned over to police.

Crews locate body of missing swimmer Saturday (March 31)

Fire dispatch reported that rescue divers found the missing swimmer’s body underwater at 10:02 a.m. Saturday (March 31) in the pool area below Rainbow Falls. Chopper One was able to airlift the body and the scene was turned over to the police. The park was re-opened to visitors.

Hawai`i Island Police are investigating the possible drowning of a 62-year-old woman and is searching for a 61-year-old man after they were swept down the Wailuku River. 

At 12:39 p.m., Saturday, (November 25), police and fire personnel responded to the Rainbow Falls State Park for a report of a couple who fell into the water while crossing the river above the falls.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:40 p.m. alarm Saturday (Nov 25) to the Wailuku River upstream from Rainbow Falls in Hilo for a missing male and female swept into the waters.

Witnesses reported seeing a male and female having difficulty swimming in the Wailuku River about 100 yards upstream from Rainbow Falls. The witnesses said they saw the two go under the water and did not surface.

A Big Island man died Saturday after jumping into the Wailuku River in Hilo.

He has been identified as 23-year-old Joseph Tancredi of Hilo.

South Hilo patrol officers responded to a 6:30 p.m. report of a drowning in an area of the river just above Rainbow Falls.

Tancredi’s acquaintances were attempting to revive him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation when officers arrived. He had reportedly jumped into a tide pool about 1/8-mile from the river bank and been held under water by white wash for about two minutes.
