DLNR to conduct feral ram and goat hunt at Puuwaawaa

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife will conduct an ungulate control program at Puu Waawaa Mauka (above Mamalahoa Highway), during three consecutive weekends in September: Labor Day weekend Sept. 2-4, Sept. 9 and 10, and Sept. 16 and 17. During these dates hiking will not be permitted.

Phase 2 of feral goat and sheep control program at Puuwaawaa to begin

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) is implementing Phase 2 of ungulate control programs in the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a (PWW) Forest Reserve, pursuant to Title 13, Chapter 123, “Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting,” §13-123-9, “Nuisance or crop damage.”

Fire/rescue crews responed to a 2:01 p.m. alarm Monday (Aug 13) to Puu Waa Waa Forest Reserve for a man injured in an ATV crash.

A 21 year-old man working at the bird sanctuary about seven miles mauka of Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) had a rollover crash in an inaccessible area and suffered facial injuries.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is issuing goat control permits for the makai portion of the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Forest Reserve on the island of Hawai‘i. 

Makai goat control will be conducted on weekends, starting September 11, 2010 and ending October 3, 2010.  Because of safety and fire risk concerns the program will be limited to archery and a maximum of 50 permit holders will be allowed per day.  There will be no limit on the number of goats taken, and deboning will be allowed.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife, USDA Forest Service, and People’s Advocacy for Trails Hawai‘i (PATH) invite the public to participate in the 4th annual “Run for the Dry Forest” trail walk/run at Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a on Saturday, October 24, 2009.

Participants have two options for fun and fitness: either run or walk a 5 km course (suitable for most people) starting at 8 a.m.; or go for an “extreme trail running experience” -- a 10 km run (start time is 7:45 a.m.) that features a 1,200 ft elevation gain in the first 3 miles.
