Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a 34-year-old Hilo man and a 27-year-old Hilo woman with a variety of offenses after police determined that the two were involved in a robbery that occurred in the Puako Beach area on, (January 07).

Police identify Seattle man in Wailea Beach swimming fatality

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a possible drowning over the weekend in the South Kohala District. At 9:35 a.m. Sunday (December 28), South Kohala officers responded to report of a male swimmer in distress at Wailea Beach in Puakō. A kayaker had found the swimmer motionless in the water and had taken him to shore.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has evaluated the 3.7 magnitude earthquake in West Hawaii Friday afternoon (June 15) and has determined that no tsunami threat is expected. The temblor struck at 2:18 p.m. off the Kona Coast.

Residential green waste collection will change from Saturdays to Sundays. The last Saturday collection will be March 31, 2012 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, April 1, 2012, and on Sundays thereafter, green waste will be collected during normal operating hours, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Puako transfer station green waste collection changes to Sundays in April

Residential green waste collection will change from Saturdays to Sundays. The last Saturday collection will be March 31, 2012 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, April 1, 2012, and on Sundays thereafter, green waste will be collected during normal operating hours, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Green waste collection will be temporarily suspended at the Puakō Recycling and Transfer Station beginning Tuesday, November 1, 2011, to remove a fire threat and enforce a ban on commercial green waste at the facility.

The transfer station will remain open three days a week according to its normal schedule for all other transfer station operations. However green waste has accumulated to amounts that could result in a combustion-generated fire and must be removed.

Firefighters responded to a 2:19 p.m. alarm Monday (July 4) to Old Puako Beach Road for a brushfire across from the area known as Beach 69.

Crews used two fire engines a tanker unit, medic unit and nine firefighers in total to work the fire. Firefighers were able to get the fire under control by 2:43 p.m. and it was declared out at 3:50 p.m.

A 69-year-old woman died Monday (June 21) from an apparent drowning in waters along the South Kohala Coast. The victim, who was vacationing with family on the Big Island, has been identified as a Gloria Graf of Glendale, California.
