Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a significant increase in reported car break-ins over the past three months, particularly in the Waiākea Uka and Kaūmana areas of Hilo.

Most of the break-ins took place overnight with wallets or other personal information being stolen. In a majority of these cases, the victim’s cars had been left unlocked and parked either on streets fronting the owner’s home or on the owner’s property.

During the week of August 18, 2014, through August 24, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 772 DUI arrests compared with 817 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.5 percent.

Police seek owner of box found in Hilo

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the owner of a box with contents that was turned in to police as found property on August 24. The box was discovered in a parking lot on Anela Street in South Hilo and has a distinctive illustration on the cover.
