Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a suspicious device found Wednesday (February 10) at a charter school in Kaʻū.

At 10:15 a.m. police received a call reporting a “pipe bomb” found in the possession of a student at the Kaʻū Learning Academy on the 94-1500 block of Kalua Circle in Discovery Harbor. Responding officers learned that school officials had found the suspicious device in the backpack of a 9-year-old boy.

During the week of February 1, 2016, through February 7, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 112 DUI arrests compared with 100 during the same period last year, an increase of 12 percent.

Two men arrested and charged with drug offenses in Kona

Two men were charged with drug offenses Sunday (February 7) following their arrest Friday (February 5) in Kona. Around 3:30 p.m. Friday, Area II Vice Officers observed 50-year-old Benjamin Fleming of Captain Cook to be an occupant of a sports-utility vehicle being operated by 52-year-old Richard Castro, who has no permanent address.

Stolen boxing gloves

Police seek info in theft of autographed boxing gloves in Puna

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a pair of Everlast boxing gloves that have the signatures of numerous boxers and referees who participated in the 1984 Olympic Games. The gloves were removed from a home in Hawaiian Beaches, possibly in mid-January.

An autopsy conducted Wednesday (February 10) determined that a man who died Sunday (February 7) after being involved in a one-vehicle/pedestrian traffic collision on Kawaihae Road died from his injuries sustained in the accident.

He has been identified as 38-year-old Jacob Freebairn of Kamuela.

Leilani Torres is wanted for contempt of court, failure to appear, and has a warrant of arrest issued for her arrest. She is also wanted for questioning in connection with other investigations.

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 62-year-old Kailua-Kona woman who was reported missing.

Jolee Reiswig was last seen in Hilo in the early evening hours on Monday, September 14, 2015. She had been swimming with a companion in the Wailuku River at a location known as Boiling Pots when she was last seen.
