Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a reported burglary in Pāhoa over the weekend.

At 2:14 p.m. Monday (January 16), Puna patrol officers responded to an active burglary at a county office off Pāhoa Village Road.

A 64-year-old woman reported that she encountered two men in the building who were portraying themselves as maintenance workers. As she went to call police, both suspects fled the area. Police determined that computer equipment valued in excess of $200 had been stolen.

Hawaiʻi Island police are seeking witnesses to the start of a fire Monday (January 16) in Pāhoa.

The fire started just after midnight Monday at a vacant business at 15-2948 Pāhoa Government Road next to Luquin’s restaurant in Pāhoa town.

Police do not suspect foul play. They ask anyone who saw or heard the start of the fire to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Wendall Carter at 961-2383 or wendall.carter@hawaiicounty.gov.

A coroner’s inquest investigation has been initiated in connection with a possible drowning in Kona on Thursday (January 12).

At 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Kona Patrol officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man in waters off Kua Bay.

When officers arrived, beach goers were attempting cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Fire/rescue personnel took the man, identified as 57-year-old Brad O’Gara of Amboy, Washington, to Kona Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 12:17 p.m.

Police arrest man wanted on warrants

Hawaiʻi Island police have located a man who is being featured on “Hawaiʻi Island’s Most Wanted” for outstanding warrants. Michael James Varize was arrested Friday morning (January 13) and charged with violating probation, theft and two counts of contempt of court. The probation violation is a no-bail warrant. Bail on the other offenses totaled $1,500.

A Hilo man is police custody in connection with a burglary last year in Hilo. The burglary on Kapaka Street in Hilo was reported on October 27. Investigation led to the identity of a suspect, identified as 40-year-old Kai Inman of Hilo.
