A Hawaiʻi Island police officer required hospital treatment after being injured while attempting to make a traffic stop in Hilo early Monday morning (July 6).

At 12:40 a.m. Monday, South Hilo Patrol officers initiated a traffic stop on a sedan on Kanoelehua Avenue near Kawili Street. The driver of the sedan failed to stop and drove away.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 19-year-old Hilo woman wanted on an outstanding bench warrant. Cristinalynn Kainani Wakita is wanted for contempt of court. She is also wanted for questioning in other investigations.

Hawaiʻi Island police are seeking witnesses to an encounter Wednesday (July 1) between a Japanese tourist and two unknown men in the Waikoloa resort area.

At 5:23 p.m. Wednesday, South Kohala officers responded to a report of a robbery fronting a shopping area on Waikoloa Beach Drive near the intersection of Kuʻualiʻi Place.

A 23-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle crash along the Hāmākua Coast on June 19.

Michael T. Moore of Laupāhoehoe was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday (July 1). The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Kona Patrol Officer Darren Cho as “Officer of the Month” for July in a luncheon ceremony Wednesday (July 1) at Huggo’s restaurant in Kailua-Kona. Cho was honored for intervening when a known criminal suspect attempted to provide a false name to another officer.

The Hawaiʻi police Department announces road closures for 4th of July festivities in Hilo:

Bayfront Highway (Route 19) from Waiānuenue Avenue to Pauahi Street will be closed July 4 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Motorists may use Kamehameha Avenue as an alternate route.
Lihiwai Street will be closed July 4 from 2 a.m. to 10 p.m.

During the week of June 22, 2015, through June 28, 2015, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 492 DUI arrests compared with 614 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.9 percent.

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA ®) will arrive on Hawaiʻi Island on July 13 to examine the Hawaiʻi Police Department’s policies and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

The purpose is to verify that the Hawaiʻi Police Department continues to meet the 400-plus National Standards established for a law enforcement agency that are required for the department to maintain voluntary accreditation.

On May 30, 2015, an unknown person entered the Keaʻau Shell gas station and used the victim’s stolen bank card to purchase items. The suspect’s image was captured on a surveillance video.
