With the approach of the long Memorial Day weekend and the continuation of graduation parties, Hawai’i Police will be on alert to help prevent tragedy on our roads. Officers will conduct DUI checkpoints and roving patrols beginning Friday, May 26, and continuing through Memorial Day, Monday, May 29.  The effort is part of a national and statewide campaign called “Drunk Driving: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

Police have identified the man who died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash Monday (May 22) on Highway 11, merging from the Keaʻau bypass (Highway 130) in Keaʻau.

He was identified as 71- year-old Ulysses Guillermo of Hilo.

Police have identified the man who died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash Monday (May 22) on Highway 11, merging from the Keaʻau bypass (Highway 130) in Keaʻau. He was identified as 71- year-old Ulysses Guillermo of Hilo.

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the body found in Hilo Bay on (May 15).

The victim was identified via fingerprints as 46- year-old Arthur Miller III, who had no permanent address.

On May 15 at 6:35 p.m. the Hawai`i Fire Department responded to a report of a body that was seen floating in Hilo Bay.  Fire personnel launched their rescue boat and recovered the disrobed body that was approximately a quarter of a mile off of the Wainaku shoreline.  The body was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where the official death pronouncement was made at 8:18 p.m.

During the week of May 15, 2017, through May 21, 2017, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 475 DUI arrests compared with 440 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

An autopsy conducted Thursday (May 18) determined that a man who died Sunday (May 14) after being involved in a one-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of the Daniel Inouye Highway (Route 200) and Māmalahoa Highway (Route 190), died from his injuries sustained in the accident.

On Thursday (May 18) he has been identified as 36-year-old Terrence Hinton of Oahu, Hawaiʻi.
