Victim of Nanawale Estates shooting is identified

Hawaiʻi Island police have positively identified the victim of the shooting Monday (May 20) in the Nanawale Estates subdivision. He is identified as 40-year-old Mateo D. Balinbin Jr. of Nanawale Estates.

Balinbin’s autopsy, originally planned for today, has been rescheduled for Wednesday (May 22).

Police DUI stats from May 13-19, 2013

During the week of May 13, 2013, through May 19, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 515 DUI arrests compared with 550 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4 percent.

Man found dead after shooting at Puna home Monday (May 20)

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the Puna District and left one person dead.

Monday afternoon (May 20) at about 2:19 p.m., police responded to a call of a shooting victim found in a home on Maui Street in the Nanawale Estates subdivision.

Police report hazardous driving conditions due to heavy rains

Hawaii Police Department is asking the public to drive use caution when traveling in the South Kohala District due to heavy rains and run off. There is a slow moving storm system in the area that is expected to last several hours. Please drive carefully on Saddle Road between the 47-49 mile markers (above Waikii Ranch) and Highway 190 between the 6-9 mile markers (between Saddle Rd./Hwy 190 junction and Waikoloa Rd.) due to heavy rains, occasional flooding and heavy run off.

As of Friday, May 17, 2013, the listed individuals are wanted by the Hawaii Police Department because of outstanding warrants. Persons who know a warrant is out for their arrest are advised to report to the nearest police station to avoid having an officer go to their home or workplace to arrest them.

Police still taking anonymous survey results this month

The public is reminded that they may participate in an anonymous Community Satisfaction Survey about the Hawaiʻi Police Department this month.

The internet survey opened May 1 and will remain open until 4 p.m. Friday, May 31. It can be accessed at www.hawaiipolice.com.

Police are searching for a Honokaa man reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 62-year-old Honokaʻa man who was reported missing on Tuesday (May 14).

Kevin Devlin, also known as Shawn Devlin, was last seen on Monday (May 13) between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Waipio Valley, where he reportedly was going for a swim. He is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds with short, thin white hair.

Police DUI stats for May 6-12, 2013

During the week of May 6, 2013, through May 12, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Eight were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 486 DUI arrests compared with 520 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent.

Police hosting HI-PAL basketball tournaments in June

The Hawaiʻi Police Department is hosting several HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” basketball tournaments during the month of June.

June 8-9 is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the Keaʻau High School gym and covered courts. This event is open to youth in the following age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, girls 10 and under, girls 12 and under, girls 14 and under, high school boys and high school girls. The deadline to complete the registration packet and enter this event is May 31.

Police warn public about e-mail bank scam

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a scam involving email messages claiming to be from financial institutions.

The email says it is an alert from a named bank and claims that the recipient’s account has experienced suspicious online activity.
