Hawaiʻi Island Police are investigating a reported residential robbery Wednesday night (September 17) in Puna.

At about 8 p.m. Wednesday, police received a call of a robbery at a home in the Fern Forest subdivision in Mountain View. Two female occupants, ages 64 and 50, reported hearing loud noises and the sound of a man yelling, “police” outside their house.

Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about a telephone scam from a caller claiming to be from Publisher’s Clearing House.

A 65-year-old Hilo man was told that he had won a car and millions of dollars and that all he needed to do to claim his prize was to purchase $1,000 in CVS gift cards and provide the card numbers from the back of the cards.

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 56-year-old man who was reported missing. Brent Verbois, who has no permanent address, was last seen in Hilo on August 24. He is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-9, 155 pounds with brown eyes and brown-and-gray hair.

During the week of September 8, 2014, through September 14, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 831 DUI arrests compared with 896 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3 percent.

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the man who died Wednesday (September 10) from injuries he received in a single-vehicle collision on Kohala Ranch Road and Olomana Road in the Kohala Ranch gated subdivision in North Kohala.

He was identified as 60-year-old Christopher A. Sprecher of Salt Lake City, Utah.
