Pahala Library to offer basic computer classes starting Tuesday (April 5)

Pahala Public & School Library will offer free basic computer classes on Tuesday evenings beginning April 5. Two 30-minute sessions will be conducted from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Computer Lab in the Adult Section.

Police investigating copper theft in Wood Valley area of Ka‘u

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a theft that was discovered on January 7 in the district of Kaʻū. Sometime between 10 p.m. January 5 and 8 a.m. January 6, unknown persons removed approximately 4,000 feet of No. 4 copper wire from the Wood Valley area. The copper was valued at $39,360.

Flood advisory issued for Big Island due to heavy rains in Ka‘u

Police identify last two victims of head-on crash which killed five

Police have identified the last two victims of a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday that killed five people on Highway 11 near Pāhala. The occupants of the 2002 Ford pickup truck, which overturned in the crash and caught fire, were identified as 64-year-old Richard Taylor of Naʻalehu and 56-year-old Trinidad Ballesteros of Naʻalehu.

KAHU 91.7 FM radio in Pahala, Hawaii received FCC (Federal Communications Commission) approval on December 12, 2012 to dismantle its last existing tower site in Naalehu. The antenna and equipment was reinstalled successfully at the station.

About 1,000 HELCO customers experience power outage Sunday (Dec 16)

Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) previously announced that HELCO customers in Pahala and Naalehu areas experienced a power outage. HELCO crews have identified an issue in our Punaluu substation and are working to address the issue. Switching has been performed and all customers have been restored as of 12:45 p.m.

The 400 acre brushfire area mauka of Pahala town is 95 percent contained and is under control. Firefighters are monitoring the area, extinguishing hot spots and maintaining the perimeter of the burn area.
