Scheduled HELCO outage in Ookala (Oct. 11)

Hawaii Electric Light Company announces a power outage is scheduled for 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. It will affect customers in the Ookala area. This power outage is necessary to allow HELCO personnel to safely perform pole replacements in the Ookala area. HELCO recommends unplugging any sensitive equipment prior to the outage.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:52 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Oct 5) to Highway 19 near the 30 mile marker in Ookala for a brushfire.

Crews found a 1/2 acre brushfire burning in tall guinea and California grass, ironwood trees and non-native plants.

Sometime between Tuesday (May 10) and Wednesday (May 11), a black PJ Gooseneck flatbed trailer was removed from the mauka side of the Hawai'i Belt Road between the 32- and 33-mile markers. Around 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, a brown older-model Ford pickup truck was seen with its hood up next to the parked trailer.

Big Island police are asking for the public's help in providing information about theft of livestock in Ookala.

On February 19, officers responded to a report of a slaughtered cow at Ookala Dairy off Route 19 near the 31-mile marker. It was reported that a 2-year-old heifer had been shot and that part of its hindquarters had been removed.

The department of Public Works will close one or more lanes at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue, Lihiwai and Manono Streets in South Hilo Sunday, December 20 to repair the overhead traffic signal.  Lane closures will be sporadic and could occur anytime of the day. Motorists traveling in the direction of Keaukaha are affected.

The Hawai'i Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a truck that was reported missing from the parking lot of Island Dairy in Ookala, North Hilo last week.

The truck is described as a red, 1999 Ford F-350, 4x4 diesel power stroke flatbed, with license plate number 313-HDN. The truck was parked and last seen on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 5 p.m. and discovered missing on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 7 a.m.
