The Hawai'i State Law Enforcement Officials Association has named Detective Sherry Bird as the Hawai'i Police Department's Officer of the Year for 2009.

Bird, an 11-year veteran of the Police Department, is assigned to the Ice Task Force in Kona.

Since she joined the unit in September 2008, Bird and the Ice Task Force either were directly involved with or assisted in the recovery of approximately 3 pounds of "ice," 5.7 ounces of cocaine, 1,205 marijuana plants, 7.5 pounds of dried marijuana and 14 grams of heroin.
