Hawaiʻi Island police have reclassified a suspicious death of an infant to murder following an eight-month investigation and recent results of an autopsy.

On November 25, Kona patrol officers responded to a report of possible child abuse. Responding officers learned that Fire Department rescue personnel had taken an unresponsive 18-month-old boy to the hospital with multiple bruises reportedly from a fall several days earlier.

Police have reclassified a death that occurred three year ago from a coroner’s inquest case to a murder.

On September 20, 2011, police were called to a Wainaku residence for a report of a woman found lifeless in the laundry room area of the home. 

Upon arrival, police discovered the body of 20-year-old Sommer Ferreira. An initial inquiry was conducted into the cause of her death. Based on the circumstances at the time of the incident, no foul play was suspected.

Randi-Keli K. Banagan was arrested at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 29) at a residence off of Captain Cook Road.

Results of an autopsy conducted Friday afternoon (March 28) on the body of Robert A. Evanson are being deferred pending further tests.

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the victim in a murder investigation as 59-year-old Robert A Evanson of Hilo.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday afternoon (March 28) to determine the cause of death.

At 7:32 p.m. Wednesday (March 26), police responded to a reported disturbance at an apartment complex on the 100 block of Ululani Street in Hilo. Upon arrival, police discovered Evanson’s lifeless body in an apartment unit. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, were he was officially pronounced dead.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an attempted murder and suicide in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Kaʻū.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday (March 12), Kaʻū patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at a property on Tiki Lane at the intersection of Luau Drive.

Police investigation determined that two men, who live in separate dwellings on the property, got into an argument. The victim, a 37-year-old man, entered his house and the suspect, a 48-year-old man, followed him and shot him. He then stepped out of the house and fatally shot himself.

Police have arrested a 38-year-old Mountain View man for a 2011 murder in Hilo. At 9:40 a.m. Tuesday (January 28), acting on a tip, police arrested Xavier J. Cortez Jr., also known as Pee Wee Cortez, on the strength of a sealed arrest warrant for second-degree murder.
