Control schedules are as follows: February 21-22, 2012. Public access to Mauna Kea Forest Reserve, Kaohe Game Management Area and Mauna Kea Hunter Access Road will be restricted, and allowed BY PERMIT ONLY for animal salvage purposes. Carcasses taken during the shoot will be available to the permitted public for salvage.

The DFW, DLNR will conduct animal control activities, specifically aerial shooting from helicopters, within Palila Critical Habitat in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve (Unit A) and Kaohe Game Management Area (Unit G) on the island of Hawaii for feral goats, feral sheep, mouflon and mouflon/feral sheep hybrids November 22-23, and November 29-30, 2011.

The Army will be conducting research on aviation noise and potential natural and cultural resource impacts, March 21 through April 1, at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) and three proposed landing zones in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve. Noise-monitoring equipment will be staged at selected locations within a five-mile radius of the three proposed landing zones on the western slope of Mauna Kea. Aircraft will touch down briefly to measure noise levels before and after.

Effective Tuesday, January 25, 2011, the Fire Closure affecting Mauna Kea Forest Reserve, Puu Waawaa Forest Reserve, Kaohe Game Management Area and Puu Anahulu Game Management Area is cancelled. Recent rains have provided enough moisture to encourage vegetation recovery to reopen areas that have been closed due to high fire danger.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will close portions of the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve and the Kaohe Game Management Area on the island of Hawai‘i for three months, due to extreme fire danger as a result of drought conditions, starting Friday, June 4, 2010 until August 31, 2010, as authorized under Hawai‘i Revised Statutes Chapter 185-3. 

No public access will be allowed during this period or until sufficient rainfall reduces the fire risk in the area.
