Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:33 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Dec 7) for a kayaker in distress off Mahukona Beach Park on the Kohala Coast.

A 53 year-old man was kayaking 300-400 yards offshore, flipped over and lost his kayak in high winds and rough seas. The man was left only with his paddle as he treaded water in the open ocean for 30 minutes.

A 53-year-old North Kohala man died Monday (February 21) as the result of a boating accident off the North Kohala coast.

The victim has been identified as James C. Williams of Hāwī.

Around 11:17 a.m. Monday, North Kohala patrol officers and Fire Department rescue personnel responded to a report of a swimmer being struck by a passing boat outside Mahukona Beach Park.

Fire/Rescue units responded to a 11:10 a.m. alarm Monday (Feb 21) to the Mahukona area for a swimmer who was struck by a boat.

A 40 year-old man was swimming with a friend in waters between Mahukona and Kapaa Park when he was struck by a boat knocking him unconscious. The people on the boat pulled the man out of the water, phoned for help and brought the man to Mahukona Pier.
