Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:45 p.m. alarm Sunday (March 4) to Laaloa Beach Park for a near drowning.

Crews arrived at the beach park and found firefighters performing CPR on a man rescued from the water. Lifeguards had the man's neck and back secured due to a possible spinal cord injury from body surfing.

A 60-year-old Washington man died Wednesday (November 30) while swimming in waters fronting White Sands Beach in Kailua-Kona.

He was identified as Michael Gene Harvey of Centraila, Washington.

At 8:09 a.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a body floating off shore. By the time  officers and firefighters arrived at the scene, the man had been pulled to shore by bystanders but was unresponsive.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that Laaloa Beach Park (aka. Magic Sands) in Kona was closed Monday (Oct 24) due to a shark sighting.    

The Department of Parks and Recreation and other County agencies requests the public’s cooperation of this closure to help keep everyone safe.

La‘aloa Beach Park (aka Magic Sands) Parking Lot will be closed on Tuesday, January 5, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., while employees work to replace the existing lifeguard tower. The County Department of Parks and Recreation has announced the general maintenance schedule for ‘Āhalanui Park, Isaac Hale Memorial Park, Kahalu‘u Beach Park and Spencer Park at ‘Ōhai‘ula Beach for the calendar year 2010.
