Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.
Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, Pāhala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.

Restoration of the Kailua Village Seawall along Aliʻi Drive, damaged by the 2011 tsunami, will begin April 23. The 11,000-square-foot Mākālei Fire Station currently under construction in Kona is 94 percent completed. Contractors for the roadwork along West Kawailani Street in South Hilo, will begin mobilizing at the site the first week in May with construction to follow.

A 77-year-old Kona woman was killed Thursday (April 19) after being involved in a four-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 190 and Hinalani Street in Kailua-Kona.
Responding to a 2:58 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the woman was operating a 2011 Hyundai multi-purpose vehicle and traveling south on Route 190 when she rear-ended a 2006 Toyota four-door sedan being operated by a 34-year-old Waikoloa man.

Big Island police are searching for a 15-year-old girl reported as missing from Honokaʻa since February 8.
Abcidy Santos, who also goes by “Abby,” is described as 5-foot-2, about 170 pounds with brown medium-length hair and brown eyes. She may be in the Hāmākua or Kona areas.
Police ask that anyone with information on her whereabouts call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Big Island police have located 22-year-old Misinale Kalavi Jr. of Keaʻau, who was wanted for questioning in connection with an apparent shooting last year that injured a Puna man.
Kalavi turned him self in at the Pāhoa police station Wednesday (April 11) and was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. After conferring with prosecutors, police released him pending further investigation.

At 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Kona patrol officers responded to a parking lot in the Hanama Place shopping area. A 43-year-old Kailua-Kona man with no permanent address reported that he had been sleeping outside a business building when he woke up to find an acquaintance forcibly removing money from his pants pocket. The victim struggled with his assailant until the assailant brandished a pocket knife and then fled with the cash.

A Kona woman who allegedly stole a rental car has been charged with seven offenses.
On March 4, Kona patrol officers received a report that 29-year-old Michelle T. Regohos had not returned the 2012 Nissan Altima sedan she had rented at the Kona airport. Police put out an all-points bulletin for the woman and the car.
