Fire/rescue crews answered a 11:04 a.m. alarm Sunday (May 28) to a vacant lot mauka of Upolu Airport for a skydiving accident.

Fire dispatch reported that the victim was a 41-year-old solo skydiver who made a high speed crash landing and was suffering from multiple serious injuries. Medics stabilized the man who was then airlifted via Chopper Two to North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition.

The Hawaiʻi Island Safety and Security Professionals Association has recognized Officer Tyler Prokopec as the “Kohala Officer of the Quarter” for the first quarter of 2017. A ceremony was held on Friday (April 21), at the Civil Defense headquarters in Hilo.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawaii until 2:30 a.m. Friday (April 14)

At 11:37 p.m., weather radar indicated very heavy rain over the leeward Kohala district, from near Puako to Mahukona, with some rain spreading to windward north Kohala. The rain was nearly stationary, with rainfall rates between two and three inches per hour in the heaviest showers.

On Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 1245 p.m., Detectives with the Area II Juvenile Aid Section charged Dwight Antonio Rivera with Attempted Murder in the First Degree. His bail was set at $100,000.00. He remains at the Kona cell block pending a court appearance this afternoon (April 10).

A 20-year-old Paʻauilo woman died following a two-vehicle crash Monday night (March 27) on Highway 270 just South of the 13 mile marker.

She was identified as Makaylyn Kalani.

Responding to a 8:40 p.m. call Monday evening, police determined that  a 2008 Honda four-door sedan operated by Kalani had been traveling North on Highway 270 near the 13 mile marker when it crossed left of center of the roadway and collided head on with a 2009 Toyota pickup truck that was traveling south.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department will be holding a community meeting for residents of North Kohala.

The meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on March 9, 2017 at the North Kohala Judiciary Building.

The meeting will begin with a open question and answer forum with Captain Jason Cortez and Community Policing Officer Kapelieli Kauahikaua Jr, and to be followed by a presentation for parents regarding cyber space safety awareness.
