Results of Tiger’s Keokea HIPA Championship Race Saturday (April 19)

The 12 mile long course started at Keokea Park in North Kohala and finished at Kapaa Beach Park, 3.5 miles south of Upolu Point.

The 7 mile short course started at Kapaa Beach Park, ran north to Upolu Point and turned to finish back at Kapaa.

Challenging conditions brought many off-island paddlers to North Kohala to compete on this championship course, where several paddlers (and Standup Paddlers) decided to finish their race at the Old Coast Guard Station.

Fire dept and Coast Guard aid kayakers blown out to sea off the Kohala Coast

Fire department and Coast Guard crews rescued a pair of kayakers in distress off the Kohala Coast Sunday afternoon (March 23).

At 12:27 p.m.Hawaii County Fire Department was notified of kayakers in distress off the Kohala Coast outside of the nine mile-marker of Akoni Pule Highway. The father of the kayakers met with fire/rescue crews onshore as Chopper Two was able to locate the pair of kayakers who were blown out to sea by very strong 20-30 mph tradewinds, currents and rough seas.

Kayakers rescued off Kohala Coast Wednesday (March 19)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:59 a.m. alarm Wednesday (March 19) to an area off-shore Akoni Pule Highway near the 12 mile marker in North Kohala for kayakers in distress.

The fire department’s Chopper Two had spotted the kayakers and hovered over the area to determine if the pair was in distress and to see if they could paddle to shore.

Police are searching for a Kohala man reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 38-year-old Kohala man who was reported missing.

Jonathan Riveira was last seen at a Hāwī home Sunday afternoon (January 12). He has a medical condition that requires medication.

He is described as 5-foot-9, 145 pounds with brown eyes and short black hair.

Flood advisory issued due to heavy rains in North Hawaii Saturday (May 4)

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii County until 2:15 a.m. Sunday (May 5). This advisory may be extended if heavy rain continues in the North Hawaii area.

At 11 p.m. weather radar showed moderate to locally heavy rain on the Leeward side of the Kohala Mountains just West of Waimea. The rains have been on and off for the past couple of hours. Other locations in the advisory area include Mahukona.

Flood advisory issued due to heavy rains in West Hawaii

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii County until 1:15 a.m. Saturday (May 4).

At 10:04 p.m. weather radar showed a line of heavy showers extending from Hawi and South to Waikoloa Village. The line of heavy showers was nearly stationary.

Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Mahukona and Kawaihae.

Surf and wind advisories for the Big Island

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday (March 23) for West facing shores of the Big Island. Surf is forecst to be in the eight to 12 foot range for the Kona-Kohala coastline. A wind advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday (March 23) for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet in elevation.

High surf advisory issued for Kona-Kohala coast

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for the Kona-Kohala coastline from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday (March 22).

Surf is forecast to be in the six to eight foot range.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory from 6 p.m. this evening until 6 p.m. Friday (Feb 1) for West facing shores of the Big Island.

The forecast is for six to 10 foot surf along West facing shores of the Big Island beginning this evening.
