The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Big Island until 3:30 a.m. Saturday (Jan 3).

At 12:18 a.m. Saturday (Jan 3) weather radar showed a band of heavy rains and thunderstorms affecting a portion of northwest area of the Big Island west of a line from Honokaa to Ka‘u South Point located midway between Honaunau and Milolii. Rainfall rates of one to two inches and briefly up to three inches an hour can be expected with these heavy rains and thunderstorms along with frequent, dangerous lightning.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for Big Island summits, Ka‘u and Kohala until 6 a.m. Monday (Dec 15).

Summit winds are forecast to be in the 30-50 mph range with gusts up to 70 mph. Winds in Ka‘u, North and East Kohala are forecast to come from the Northeast at 20-35 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph through channeled areas and areas over and immediately to the Leeward sides of mountains where trade winds blow downslope.

The Hawaiʻi Island Safety and Security Professionals Association recognized Community Policing Officer Kristi Crivello as “Kohala Officer of the Quarter” during a ceremony November 14 at the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai. Officer Crivello, who is assigned to the South Kohala District, was honored for discovering and solving a felony theft case before it was reported.

A 34-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was attacked by a shark while surfing at Halaula Lighthouse in North Kohala.

At 11:12 a.m. Friday (October 31), police received a report that the victim was en route to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital with injuries to two fingers.
