Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the body found on December 5th along the Kalapana coastline in Puna.

The victim was identified by dental records as 61 year-old Michael Clay Hughes who had no permanent address.

On December 5, 2017, officers responded to the Kalapana Gardens area after a hiker discovered a decomposing body in a remote location along the coastline.  Detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section responded to the scene, but due to darkness and limited accessibility to the area, patrol officers secured the scene until the following morning.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a hit-and-run accident late Wednesday night (August 3) in the Kalapana area.

Puna District police officers responded to an 11:11 p.m. report of a vehicle-pedestrian accident on Highway 130 in Kalapana.  A 32-year-old Keaʻau man was reportedly struck by a mini-van while on the side of the road inspecting his stalled vehicle fronting the painted church in Kalapana.

Fire rescue crews responded to a 10:24 a.m. alarm Saturday (June 4) to 12-4919 Ahia Road in the Kalapana area of Puna for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find a single-story home engulfed in flames. Firefighters had the fire under control by 11:10 a.m. and it was declared out at 11:30 a.m.
