Police searching for man in connection with Holualoa burglary

Big Island Police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a man wanted for an outstanding bench warrant related to a burglary, stolen vehicles and drug offenses.

29 year-old Kaulike Rice is wanted in connection with a recent indictment handed down by a Grand Jury. The indictment charges Rice as being responsible for a burglary which occurred in Holualoa this past September 10th in which computer equipment, vehicle documentation, lawn care equipment, a large amount of savings bonds and a significant amount of jewelry was taken

Holualoa Foundation for Arts & Culture appoints new director

The Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture recently announced the appointment of Kate Jacobson as the organization’s Executive Director. Jacobson will oversee all aspects of programs, special events and operations at the Donkey Mill Art Center.

Jacobson brings to the Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture years of experience as both a professional artist and a community organizer.

Holualoa Foundation for Arts & Culture welcomes the return of their signature cultural event “Cool Fusion” Sunday, September 5, 2010 from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at Donkey Mill Art Center.  During this 4th annual fundraising event, an astounding 1000 ceramic bowls were hand-made by several local artists at Donkey Mill Art Center’s ceramics studio.

Mamalahoa Hwy in Holualoa re-opens after downed power lines repaired

Hawaii County police report that Route 180 (Mamalahoa Highway) is open for two-way traffic in Holualoa. The roadway was closed between the 6 and 7 mile markers due to a downed power line.
A downed utility pole 50 yards south of Keopu Mauka Road in North Kona has closed Route 180 in both directions for about an hour (until 12:30 p.m.)

HELCO crews are at the scene.

Motorists should use Kuakini Highway until Route 180 is reopened.

Biochar (biomass charcoal) is a special type of charcoal made to optimize characteristics that make it useful in agriculture. As a soil amendment, biochar has been shown to dramatically increase crop yield and fertilizer efficiency. It also remains in the soil for decades, helping to slow release of carbon into the atmosphere. Participants will learn how to make biochar for use in their gardens and farms.

Updated: Motorcycle rider who died in Kona crash identified

Police traffic investigators have identified a 53-year-old Kealakekua man who died Monday (February 8) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on Route 180 .1 mile north of Hualālai Road in Kailua-Kona.

The victim was identified as Mark D. Bilan, of a Kealakekua address.

This was the 6th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with four [corrected] at this time last year.
