Police warn public about 15-20 in car break-ins occuring in Hilo each month

For the past several months, there have been approximately 15 to 20 car break-ins in Hilo monthly. Of these break-ins, approximately 50 percent involves vehicles being left unlocked, to include vehicles left unlocked at home. Other major contributing factors are valuable items being left in plain view within a vehicle, and car keys being stolen which are left unattended alongside the beach areas which allow suspects to gain access into vehicles. These break-ins have occurred at various locations in Hilo.

A renovated Reed’s Bay Beach Park officially opened to the public Saturday (April 28) adding walkways, showers, landscaping with added safety using low walls for seating and keeping vehicles out.

Drug take-back program in Hilo and Kona Saturday (April 28)

The Hawaiʻi Police Department is encouraging the public to participate in a nationwide prescription drug take-back initiative being sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the state Department of the Attorney General, the Department of Public Safety and community partners.

Five county swimming pools to temporarily close for safety upgrades

Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.

Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, Pāhala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.

Work on Kailua Bay seawall lava rock facade to begin Monday (April 23)

Restoration of the Kailua Village Seawall along Aliʻi Drive, damaged by the 2011 tsunami, will begin April 23. The 11,000-square-foot Mākālei Fire Station currently under construction in Kona is 94 percent completed. Contractors for the roadwork along West Kawailani Street in South Hilo, will begin mobilizing at the site the first week in May with construction to follow.

Hilo bicyclist who died when hit by vehicle is identified

A Hilo man who died April 11 in a vehicle-bicycle collision on Kinoʻole Street in Hilo has been positively identified. He was identified through dental records Wednesday (April 18) as 20-year-old Brody H. Winslow, formerly of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

Police investigating purse snatching from 86 year-old Hilo woman

Big Island police are investigating a reported robbery in Hilo on Tuesday night (April 17).

At about 5:39 p.m. Tuesday, South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a purse snatching in Downtown Hilo. They learned that an 86-year-old Hilo woman had been walking along Haili Street near a movie theater when an unknown male pushed her from behind—causing her to fall—and stole her purse.

The Department of Water Supply will be conducting a fire hydrant flow test at a hydrant in the Railroad Avenue area in Hilo from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012. The affected area may experience slightly discolored and turbid water for several hours after the test.

Police charge Volcano woman in hit-and-run fatal crash with bicycle

Big Island police have charged a 40-year-old Volcano woman who was arrested after a hit-and-run vehicle-bicycle crash in Hilo on Wednesday (April 11).

Alison E. Taylor was charged at 12:05 a.m. Friday (April 13) with negligent homicide, accident involving death or serious injury, failure to provide information or render aid, driving with a suspended license and inattention to driving. Her bail was set at $8,500.
