Structure fire forces closure of highway in Keaukaha Thursday morning

A fire in the Keaukaha area of Hilo caused the closure of Kalanianaʻole Avenue for several hours Thursday (May 2).

At approximately 8:18 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a fire on the 1900 block of Kalanianaʻole Avenue. Upon arrival, they found an older single-family dwelling and surrounding shrubbery burning and Fire Department personnel fighting the flames.

Police locate Hilo man reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police have located 68-year-old Paulo Vakautafefine of Hilo, who was reported missing.

He was found a short distance from his Wainaku home at 3:55 p.m. Friday.

After paramedics examined him, he was returned to his family.

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for the public’s help in locating a missing 21-year-old Hilo man.

Jensen Joshua Yadao was last contacted by a relative on March 10 and has not been seen since.

Theft Suspect

Suspect using stolen credit cards in Hilo and Puna is sought

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man wanted in connection with numerous theft and fraudulent use of credit card investigations.

On March 24, an unidentified male used a stolen credit card at several retail establishments in the Hilo and Puna districts. He is described as a local Caucasian-Portuguese mix about 5-foot-9, 165 pounds with a skinny build and a fair complexion.

Wind advisory for Big Island summits, record temperature in Hilo Sunday

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet in elevation until 6 p.m. this evening. A record high temperature of 87 degrees was set in Hilo Sunday (April 14). This breaks the old record for the date set in 1979.

Shoplifting Suspect

Police seek information on shoplifting suspect

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman wanted for shoplifting.

On March 27 at about 4:20 p.m. the unidentified woman removed items from a Hilo retail establishment without paying for them. She is described as Caucasian-mix, short with a large build and long dark hair.

Police charge Hilo man wanted for taxi robbery

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested and charged 31-year-old Bernard K. Antoque, who was wanted in connection with the robbery of a taxi driver in Hilo.

Antoque, who has no permanent address, was arrested Thursday evening (April 11) on suspicion of robbery and held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

Hawaiʻi Island police have located 22-year-old Kyson Kaleiwahea of Volcano, who was wanted on outstanding warrants and for questioning in connection with burglaries in Hilo.

Police located Kaleiwahea Monday afternoon (April 1) at a shopping plaza on Puainakō Street in Hilo.

Police are searching for a 51 year old Hilo man reported missing early Sunday morning.

Dennis Nabarro was last seen in Hilo early Sunday morning (March 24, 2013). He is described as being Filipino/Hawaiian, 5’5″, 140 pounds, having a medium build with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt and khaki shorts.
Nabarro is in need of medical attention.
