Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a reported robbery at a financial institution in Hilo.

At about 9:53 a.m. Wednesday (February 8), South Hilo patrol officers and detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Division responded to a robbery at a bank on the 500 block of Kīlauea Avenue. Police determined that a suspect had entered the bank, produced a note demanding money and fled the area with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one in the bank was physically injured.

Hilo man charged in theft of golf cart and other items from Waiakea High School

A Hilo man has been charged with three felonies in connection with a stolen golf cart in Hilo. Sometime between Tuesday (January 31) and Wednesday (February 1) a gas-powered golf cart and other items, including two car batteries, were taken during a burglary of a secured storage area at Waiākea High School.

A 42-year-old Hilo woman has died from a single-vehicle crash the evening of January 23 on Haku Nui Road in Captain Cook.

She has been identified as Chantel Kaaumoana.

Responding to a 9:24 p.m. call, police determined that a 1981 American Jeep operated by a 34-year-old Captain Cook women had been traveling west on Haku Nui Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The collision caused Kaaumoana to be ejected from the vehicle and to sustain life-threatening injuries.

Fire/rescue responded to a 5:02 p.m. alarm Thursday (Jan 26) to Honolii Beach Park for the near drowning of a kayaker.

Rescue crews arrived to find an off-duty lifeguard performing CPR on a man in his 60s. Witnesses reported the man was seen slumped-over on a kayak before being knocked over into the ocean by a wave. Surfers in the area were able to bring the man to shore.

The Department of Water Supply will be conducting a fire hydrant flow test on East Makaʻala Street between the hours of 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. The affected area may experience slightly discolored and turbid water for several hours after the test.
