The Hawaiʻi police Department announces road closures for 4th of July festivities in Hilo:

Bayfront Highway (Route 19) from Waiānuenue Avenue to Pauahi Street will be closed July 4 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Motorists may use Kamehameha Avenue as an alternate route.
Lihiwai Street will be closed July 4 from 2 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A 28-year-old man who is being featured on the television program “Hawaiʻi Island’s Most Wanted” has been arrested and charged with three offenses. Aaron Raymond Castro was arrested Monday after turning himself in at the Hilo police station. He was charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault and second-degree theft. A decomposed body found Monday off the road leading to the Hilo airport has been identified through fingerprints as a 72-year-old Hilo man with no permanent address.

His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday ruled out foul play and determined that he died of natural causes. The exact cause of death is pending results of further analysis.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying persons responsible for a spike in graffiti in Hilo.

Between May 1 and June 16, police received 10 reports of graffiti in Hilo. This compares with three reports in March and two in April. Numerous other incidents went unreported.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating the discovery of a decomposed body in Hilo.

At 8:37 a.m. Monday (June 15), South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of a body off the road leading to the Hilo airport.

They found the body under a makeshift shelter in overgrowth about 80-100 feet south of Kekuanaoa Street and approximately a half-mile east of the intersection of Kekuanaoa Street and Kanoelehua Avenue. The body was in advanced stage of decomposition.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help with information about a burglary in February in the Sunrise Ridge subdivision in Hilo.

At 1:30 p.m. on February 2, police responded to a report of a burglary that happened on Hoʻokina Place.

Police learned that a safe containing 12 rifles, three handguns, miscellaneous jewelry and a large amount of cash had been removed from the house. Value of the items is estimated at $22,500.

She was identified through fingerprints Tuesday (June 2) as 62-year-old Bobbie Jackie Carnathan of Kailua-Kona, who was reported missing Saturday (May 30).

An autopsy conducted Wednesday (June 3) determined that she died from traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a height. Police do not suspect foul play.
