In conjunction with the 52nd Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, a temporary one-way traffic pattern will be in effect on Kalanikoa Street in Hilo.

Traffic will be allowed to flow in the makai, or northerly direction on Kalanikoa Street between Piʻilani Street and Kuawa Street during the festival. The one-way traffic pattern will remain in effect around the clock from 12 noon Wednesday, April 8, through 8 a.m. Sunday, April 12.

Hilo man is charged with 16 offenses after theft of purse

A Hilo man has been charged with 16 offenses stemming from the theft of a purse. The purse was stolen from an 87-year-old woman at a drug store on Puainako Street in Hilo just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday (March 22). Shortly thereafter, the victim’s credit card was used at two businesses in the vicinity.

Police are searching for Ada Araki, a 55-year-old woman reported missing. Araki was last seen in Hilo Friday (March 13), was possibly headed to Kona and may be in need of medication.

Araki is 4 feet, nine inches tall, has brown eyes, gray hair, was last seen wearing blue pants and a light green shirt.

To accommodate mass walkers at the 18th Annual Hilo Heart & Stroke Walk & Health Fair, there will be a temporary one-way traffic pattern on Banyan Drive.

Traffic will be allowed to flow in the makai, or northeasterly, direction on Banyan Drive between both sides of Lihiwai Street. The one-way traffic pattern will be in effect between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 7.

Military convoys to travel between PTA and Hilo

Oahu-based service members will convoy between Pōhakuloa Training Area and Keaukaha Military Reservation, beginning March 4. Convoys will travel from PTA to KMR, March 4, 5 and 8, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Convoys will travel from KMR to PTA, March 5 and 7, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an officer involved shooting in downtown Hilo just before midnight Saturday (February 28).

At approximately 11:57 p.m., South Hilo Patrol officers were just leaving the area of the Kilauea Avenue extension in a marked police subsidized vehicle that was stopped at the Mamo Street intersection when a silver late-model Chevy compact four-door sedan sped toward them in a threʻatening manner, striking the police vehicle. The suspect’s car continued northbound on the Kilauea Avenue extension and struck a parked car, injuring a 27-year-old Ookala woman standing next to it.
