Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 17-year-old Hilo girl who was reported missing.

Brianna Kehaulani Freitas-Jones was last seen in Hilo on March 21. She is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-7, 130 pounds with green eyes and brown hair.

Police ask that anyone with information on her whereabouts call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.

Police seek Hilo man wanted for parole violation

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 42-year-old Hilo man wanted for a parole violation.

Dale Daniel Arruda is described as part Hawaiian, 5-foot-7, 170 pounds with short brown hair and brown eyes. He may have a goatee.

He is known to frequent the Puna District.

Jeep burns in Hilo garage, house spared Saturday (April 12)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:28 alarm Saturday (April 12) to 272 Kaiulani Street in Hilo for a vehicle on fire.

Firefighers arrived to find a 2010 Jeep inside of a garage with the engine compartment on fire. The fire was spreading to the walls and ceiling of the garage. Crews put out the fire and used fans to remove smoke from the garage and residence.

The loss in the fire is estimated to be $24,500 with the house escaping major damage.

One-way traffic on Kalanikoa Street during Merrie Monarch Festival

In conjunction with the 51st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, a temporary one-way traffic pattern will be in effect on Kalanikoa Street in Hilo.

Traffic will be allowed to flow in the makai, or northerly direction on Kalanikoa Street between Piʻilani Street and Kuawa Street during the festival. The one-way traffic pattern will remain in effect around the clock from 12 noon Wednesday, April 23, through 8 a.m. Sunday, April 27.

Hilo man charged with felonies after posing as licensed contractor in 2012

Hilo man has been charged with three felonies after allegedly posing as a licensed contractor.

At 4:34 p.m. Friday (April 4) 37-year-old Ricky Mesa was charged with first-degree theft and two felony counts of unlicensed contractor fraud. His bail was set at $60,000. He was held at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance on Monday (April 7).

Three men arrested by police as suspects in Hilo burlary

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested three men suspected of committing a residential burglary in Hilo.

On Thursday (April 3), South Hilo Patrol officers, along with investigators from the Special Enforcement Unit and the Area I Juvenile Aid Section, responded to a 12:15 p.m. report from a neighbor of an active burglary occurring at a Likeke Street home where two men fled

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating an 18-year-old Hilo man wanted for suspicion of a burglary that happened yesterday (Thursday) in Puna.

Darren K. Ornellas is described as a local male, 5’5” tall, weighing about 135 pounds, tan complexion, short brown hair, and a light mustache. He is known to operate a brownish colored 1992 Honda 4 door sedan with dark colored rims with a chrome finish ring, bearing license plate HLS-049.

High Surf Advisory for East facing shores of Big Island, record rainfall yesterday in Hilo

A record rainfall of 5.17 inches was set in Hilo Tuesday (April 1). This breaks the old record of 3.57 inches let in 1972. A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday (April 3) for East facing shores of the Big Island.

Surf is forecast to be five to eight feet along East facing shores of the Big Island. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday for the Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Windward, Leeward and Southeast waters.
