County to improve Kaipalaoa Landing Park at Hilo Bayfront

The County of Hawai’i is partnering with a community group to improve Downtown Hilo’s Kaipalaoa Landing Park, a historic site and favorite surf spot near the intersection of Waianuenue and Kamehameha Avenues. The project will repair damaged rock walls and restore eroded areas, repair grass and a walkway, and install new showers and picnic tables.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:10 p.m. alarm Thursday (July 23) to Piihonua Bridge to rescue two injured people in a pond at the base of a waterfall.

Crews found a male and female below the falls at the edge of the whitewater who could not get out due to their injuries. The pair were injured in the rapidly moving water by the falls.

Man charged in Hilo burglary case

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a man in connection with a burglary in Hilo late last year or early this year. Sometime between December 27 and January 9, a house on Komohana Street was broken into and a laptop computer and jewelry were removed.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday (July 21) determined that a man who died Saturday (July 18) after being involved in a one-vehicle traffic collision on Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo died from a medical condition.

He has been identified as 61-year-old Thomas Pokorski of Covina, California.

A Hilo man has been charged with burglary, theft and drug offenses in connection with a break-in last week in Hilo. The burglary was reported after someone stole personal items from a home on Iolani Street last Wednesday (July 15). Police investigation led to the identity of a suspect, 37-year-old Alan Filoteo of Hilo.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and assault in connection with a double stabbing early Monday (July 20) at Wailoa State Park. At 4:31 p.m. Monday, detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section charged David Lester Bars, who has no permanent address, with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault.

Hawaii Electric Light Company reported that at 10:20 a.m. Monday (July 13) about 1,420 customers were without power from Wainaku to Puueo Paku. HELCO has crews responding to the outage area and as of 10:40 a.m. has reported that about 1,065 customers have had their power restored.

About 355 HELCO customers remain without power as crews continue to work on restoration.
