The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will be holding its fourth public information meeting on sea level rise vulnerability and adaptation on Thursday, August 17, 2017.  The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Aupuni Center Conference Room, located at 101 Pauahi Street in Hilo, Hawai‘i.

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the closure of Richardson Beach Park from Monday, August 14, 2017 through Friday, August 18, 2017, for routine maintenance of trees along the shoreline. The beach park will reopen on Saturday, August 19, 2017.  If work concludes earlier than Friday, the department will notify the public.

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 15-year-old Captain Cook girl who was reported missing. Irene Hernandez was last seen in Hilo on (December 8, 2016). She is described as Hispanic, 5-feet-one-inch, 150 pounds, stocky build, tan complexion, with shoulder length brown hair and hazel eyes.

Police arrest three for murder of starving Hilo girl

Hawaiʻi Island police arrested three family members (July 14), in connection with a murder investigation. Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Section arrested 49-year-old Kevin Lehano, 33-year-old Tiffany Stone and 59-year-old Henrietta H. Stone at approximately 3 p.m. for second degree murder under the strength of a bench warrant following a grand jury indictment.

Sewage spill closes waters near Kaipalaoa Landing in Hilo Bay

A sewage spill has forced the closure of recreational activity in Hilo Bay at the shoreline near the Wailuku River and Kaipalaoa Landing Monday (July 10). A broken sewer line leaked wastewater into a storm drain at the corner of Waianuenue Avenue and Kinoole Street.

Police seek info regarding damage to statue at Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo

Hawaiʻi Island Police are asking the public for assistance in identifying suspect(s) in a criminal property damage case. A statue fronting the Pacific Tsunami Museum located at the corner of Kamehameha Ave and Kalākaua St was damaged between (June 24-26). The heads of a mermaid and a turtle were broken off the stone statue.
