The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for north facing shores of Hawaii Island through Monday evening. The swell will build today and is expected to peak on Monday. The most dangerous time along the coast is during periods of high tide forecast to occur around 1:30 a.m. Monday (March 18).

High Surf Warning continues for Hawaii Island, some Hilo beach parks closed

Parks and Recreation Department reports the following Hilo beach parks are open: Coconut Island and all parks along Keaukaha shoreline from Reed’s Bay to Richardson’s, including Pu’u Maile. Hilo Bay Front Canoe Halau Area will remain closed today.

High Surf Warning in effect for Hawaii Island

This is a High Surf update for Wednesday afternoon, March 21st at 2:45. The National Weather Service High Surf Warning remains in effect for the shorelines of Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna today through Thursday (March 22). Surf is forecast to be in the 20-25 foot range.

High surf warning for north and west facing shores of Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. Sunday.

An extremely large, long period northwest swell will build quickly during the day, peaking this afternoon and evening. Very large surf well above the warning level is expected beginning this morning and continuing through the weekend, and potentially into Monday for the smaller islands. North and west facing shores on Hawaii Island should expect warning level surf by this afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. this evening.

Winds are from the northeast at 20-35 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph. Winds will be strongest over ridge tops and through mountain gaps as well as leeward slopes of the islands.

The large west-northwest swell is forecast generate surf 8-12 feet tonight through early Saturday morning along west facing shores in Kona and Kohala. The greatest impacts are expected during the high tide at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday (Jan 14) in Kailua-Kona.

A very large west northwest swell is expected to arrive tonight bringing rising surf Friday with warning level surf expected. The new swell be from a more westerly direction than the last swell so it will bring warning level surf to west facing shores of Hawaii island.
