Police seek info in theft of autographed boxing gloves in Puna

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a pair of Everlast boxing gloves that have the signatures of numerous boxers and referees who participated in the 1984 Olympic Games. The gloves were removed from a home in Hawaiian Beaches, possibly in mid-January.

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a 49-year-old Pāhoa man with two offenses stemming from an incident Friday (October 23) in Puna. Keith Kaapana Cummings was taken into custody Friday afternoon following a brief standoff in which he barricaded himself in a house in the lower portion of Hawaiian Beaches.

Firefighters responded to a 6:26 p.m. alarm Monday evening to 15-2685 Kumu Street in the Hawaiian Beach subdivision of Puna.

Crews arrived to find a single story, unoccupied home with smoke coming from the rafters and flames in the walls. Firefighters had to force their way through the locked and fenced property line and open a boarded up doorway.

Keonepoko Elementary to reopen for next school year

The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) will begin the planning process to reopen Keonepoko Elementary School in Hawaiian Beaches now that lava is no longer an immediate threat to the area. The planning will also include addressing all of the adjustments made in October 2014 that affected 1,700 students and 300 employees.

Police arrest Pahoa man for arson in Hawaiian Beaches structure fire

A 45-year-old Pāhoa man is in police custody following a domestic dispute in Pāhoa Sunday night (December 2). Around 4:15 a.m. Monday (December 3), police arrested Peter Lopes for second-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree arson, third-degree assault and first-degree promoting a detrimental drug.

Fire destroys home in Hawaiian Beaches Subdivision Sunday (Dec 2)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 8:15 p.m. alarm Sunday (Dec 3) to a structure fire in the Hawaii Beaches subdivision. Crews found a 20×60 foot home engulfed in flames with the carport roof collapsed. A live downed powerline fronting the structure made access difficult for firefighters.

Big Island police are investigating an incident in which a 16-year-old boy was injured at his Pāhoa home on Saturday (June 4).

At about 5:11 p.m., Puna patrol officers responded to a report of an injured person at a home in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision. Officers discovered the unconscious victim with an apparent wound to his chest area. Medics treated the victim at the scene and then transported him to Hilo Medical Center.
